Landing retail sales jobs

The pre-requisite of landing a job in retail sales is similar to that required in any other job description. This is the right educational background and the experience relevant for that particular job.

Initially, prepare a good, informative CV that gives details of your personal, academic and career background and register with a good employment agency. Applying for jobs yourself means searching through the job section of local newspapers and relevant job magazines.

Landing the initial job interview is a step in the right direction. This is when you can use good interview skills and sell yourself in the best possible way to the person interviewing you for the job. A positive, friendly, pro-active personality will be good points to promote in your personality and do stress your ability to work hard and surpass any sales target set by the company.

Retail sales can be classified into different groups. Each of these groups has a slightly different aspect to how sales are made and the skills required to land a job in that particular group.

You could be working on the shop floor where you have face to face contact with customers who come into the store. You represent the face of that store and your attitude and knowledge of what you are selling will influence a customer to buy a product or not. Even if it is working at a check out counter in a grocery store you still will have lots of customer contact on a daily basis and if you are a shy person who likes to work alone the selling on the shop floor is not for you.

Some of the retail sales staff works away from the shop floor in offices. These are the telesales staff. It is their constant calls to existing customers that keeps them in touch with and their needs and any queries are resolved in a polite and informative manner. They make their customers aware of any new products or deals that might interest them. They also ring prospective customers in the hope of increasing the sales revenue of a business.

Telesales staff and related retail staff that work in a similar capacity need good telephone skills and good product knowledge. If you have these qualities then there is no reason why you would not get a telesales jobs. There are lots of jobs advertised which include selling conservatories, windows or kitchens via the telephone.

Retail sales could also involve a lot of cold calling where you actually visit prospective customers who have been targeted via the telesales staff. You have to be comfortable meeting people in their own homes and your product knowledge has to be impeccable to be able to answer all sorts of questions relating to the product that you are trying to sell.

The main qualities required, as mentioned above include a friendly, sociable personality who is not shy of people but loves customer contact. Product knowledge is another vital quality to cultivate so any training courses available should be taken to enhance what you already know. Keeping up to date with changes in market trends, and the economy is an advantage as is having a good financial background if you are working higher up in retail sales management.
