Conservatories: How To Maintain A Comfortable Temperature Throughout The Year

A conservatory is more than just an extension to your house. It can be somewhere to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the garden no matter what the weather is doing, a place to entertain or much needed extra space for the children to play. But whatever your reason for adding a conservatory to your home, it is a significant investment, and choosing the right glass will only add to its value.

Self-Cleaning Clear and Blue Glass – a world first from Pilkington.
Pilkington Activ™ is the world’s first self-cleaning glass. It’s basically the same as conventional glass, except for a unique dual action coating. It works in two ways: first it uses daylight to break down organic dirt (such as bird droppings) and then it uses rain to wash the dirt away.

Pilkington Activ™ also dries off faster leaving the glass clean and with reduced streaks, which gives you beautifully clear views and makes it ideal for all the windows in the conservatory. Pilkington Activ™ Blue combines the benefits of self-cleaning with solar control performance, making it the perfect choice for hard to reach places that are difficult to clean and areas that need thermal control, such as conservatory roofs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is self-cleaning glass?
Pilkington Activ™ is an optifloat glass with a special coating on the outside that has a unique dual action. Once exposed to daylight, the coating breaks down any organic dirt and then causes rain water to ‘sheet’ down the glass to wash the dirt away. The coating has been designed to last as long as the glass itself. The coating is permanent and will not need reapplying.

Where can Pilkington Activ™ be used?
Almost any exterior application, such as windows, conservatories, facades and glass roofs. It is especially useful for inaccessible windows where organic dirt normally collects, such as skylights. Pilkington Activ™ is less effective in locations where sun or rain cannot reach e.g. overhangs. The minimum recommended angle is 10 degrees from horizontal, so that rain water can flow over the glass properly.

Will my windows ever need cleaning?
We cannot say that your windows will never need cleaning – that depends on the amount of dirt and the amount of rain the glass in your windows receives. Pilkington Activ™ reduces the amount of maintenance required. If cleaning is necessary – such as during long dry spells or if your windows are heavily soiled – it will be much less frequent and much easier than with conventional glass, either by hosing to replicate rainfall or using a soft cloth and warm soapy water.

Does it work on cloudy days and at night?
Pilkington Activ™ needs only a small amount of UV radiation to activate the coating – so it works on even overcast days and throughout.

PILKINGTON ACTIV™ CONNECTS WITH SUPER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS.

There are double celebrations in St Helens, where two of the most famous names in the area have scored major successes! St Helens Rugby League Club has finished top of the 2006/07 league. The newly crowned super league cup champions are ecstatic after a comprehensive victory over Hull at the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford. At the same time, another victory took place for local glass company, Pilkington who announced a massive ten fold increase in sales of its revolutionary Pilkington Activself-cleaning glass in just one year.

Now in a further link between club and company, St Helens star hooker Kieron Cunningham recently announced his retirement from the international scene and, affording himself the luxury of more space in his Merseyside home, erected a 11 x 5m bespoke split level Edwardian conservatory to house his rugby memorabilia and his beloved pool table. Cleaning such an expanse of glazing may have been a problem, even for the superfit star, but with the installation of Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning glass throughout, Kieran can relax and allow the revolutionary product do all the hard work. “The self-cleaning and solar-control glass is a huge bonus,” comments Kieron. “I can easily regulate the temperature which is essential when I’m concentrating on my pool skills! And best of all it means I can spend more time relaxing than climbing up and down a ladder!”

The vertical windows are glazed with Pilkington Activ™ with the roof enveloped in Pilkington Activ™ Blue, a product specifically designed for conservatories.

ActivBlue is not only self-cleaning but also has solar control properties that help keep conservatories cooler in summer. Pilkington Activ™ has a virtually invisible dual action coating which reacts with UV rays to break down organic dirt on the surface of the glass and encourage rainwater flow down the glass in an even sheeting effect, preventing rain droplets forming and washing away any remaining dirt.
Thus the concept of self-cleaning glass becomes reality, making ActivBlue the perfect conservatory glass.

The units were constructed using the Pilkington Insulight concept, which allows two different types of Pilkington glass to be installed. In the case of Kieron’s extension, Pilkington ActivBlue on the outside is coupled with Pilkington K Glass™ to the inner pane, to combine solar control, self-cleaning and thermal insulation in one high performance solution. Local firm Excell Upvc designed and undertook the installation as registered installer of Pilkington Activ™ glass.

Having been involved in the rugby league scene for so many years, Keiron deserves the luxury that his new conservatory brings, and with the help of Pilkington Activ™, he can now relax. With the arduous task of cleaning windows eliminated, his only exertion is with his pool cue!

Self-Cleaning Glass: OFFERING A CLEAR ADVANTAGE

Recent figures clearly show that homeowners are willing and able to up-spec their conservatories. Conservatories Active looks at how margins and customer satisfaction are increased by selling up conservatories with options such as self-cleaning glass.

According to information contained in the report by AMA Research the ‘Domestic Conservatory Market – UK 2004, the conservatory market is worth more than £1.3 billion at retail prices. However, says AMA, the market value increases towards £2 billion when installation costs, furniture, lighting, flooring, window coverings and other accessories are included.

What this extraordinary statistic confirms is that Britain’s homeowners are willing, and able, to dig deeper still into their pockets to customize their conservatory, to add the finishing touches to what is an extension of their home that will have a profound effect on the way they use their home, not merely an improvement to it. However, glass conservatories are essentially an extension of the glazing industry – the double glazing industry – means that many of the methods and cultures upon which the conservatory industry is founded are shared with the window market. Including, some of its more negative traits. In particular, the habit of going for the price close as a means of securing an order now pervades the conservatory market.

The result of underselling, invariably, is a conservatory that may be poorly ventilated, cold in winter, too hot in summer, noisy when it rains and difficult to clean, none of which it needs to be. It means that the bright, shiny new pride and joy that Mr. & Mrs. Jones have increased their mortgage for quickly loses its charm, and therefore the all-year-round versatility that any conservatory should offer them. It also denies worthwhile margin to the installer, and possibly even sales recommendations. What makes this worse is that the homeowner would almost certainly, faced with a reasonably convincing pitch, upgrade to overcome these inevitable negatives.

Pilkington Activ™, the world’s first self cleaning glass, provides a case in point, one that would be true of any so called ‘luxury’ extras that would inevitably add worthwhile and tangible value to a conservatory, but which the lazy or nervous sales person avoids pitching. Pilkington Activ™ may cost a little extra but, especially when specified for a conservatory roof, it is in its element – quite literally.

Using an inert and totally safe coating that is applied during manufacture of the glass, it uses ultra violet light from normal daylight, and rainwater, to quite literally keep itself clean. Ultra violet light combines with the coating – an otherwise unremarkable compound called titanium dioxide that is used in such humble products as toothpaste – to degrade organic matter soiling the surface of the glass, in a continuous process. Then, when it rains, the second action created by the coating causes the rainwater to ‘sheet’, and wash the organic soiling off the glass, taking inorganic matter with it. Stubborn soiling may be helped along by a light hosing, with the glass looking pristine and streak-free without any further effort. Thus, through the break through of self-cleaning glass, one of the biggest disappointments of owning a conservatory is avoided – forever.

Self-cleaning and Solar Control Glass for Conservatories

When it comes to conservatories, you should be able to enjoy yours, comfortably, throughout the year. Choosing a glazing unit that combines Pilkington Activ™ Blue, with a low-E glass such as Pilkington K Glass™ enables dual solar control and thermal insulation, so your conservatory can maintain a comfortable temperature all year round.

Thermal Insulation Pilkington K Glass™, which usually forms the inner pane of a double-glazing unit, has a special low emissivity coating to help reduce the amount of heat that escapes through your windows. This is particularly important in conservatories in winter, when it can be increasingly difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature. The special energy-saving coating on Pilkington K Glass™ lets the sun’s rays through, but reflects heat from fires and radiators back into your home, saving energy and reducing your heating bills.

Benefits Of Thermal Insulation
- Low e glass makes double glazing as effective as triple glazing
- Allows you to increase the glazed area of a building without increasing heat loss
- Allows you to stay comfortable at a lower thermostat setting
- Reduces unsightly internal condensation
- Helps to save energy, reducing heat loss by up to 45%

Solar Control – Reducing The Sun’s Heat
Pilkington Activ™ Blue combines the revolutionary benefits of a self-cleaning coating with the solar control performance of a tinted glass. In summer months, glass with solar control can help prevent heat build up, by significantly reducing the amount of heat allowed to pass into your conservatory. In winter when the ventilators are closed, the glass lets in enough light and heat to help your conservatory stay warm.

Benefits of Pilkington Activ™ Blue
- Combines solar control and self-cleaning properties
- Helps reduce heat build up – further ventilation may also be required
- Its self-cleaning properties work on cloudy days and during the night
- Easily cleaned during dry spells by hosing down
- Self-clean coating lasts the lifetime of the glazing
- Attractive blue colour offers excellent aesthetics
- It allows good light transmittance
- Low reflection

Pilkington Activ™ can be combined with a vast range of other Pilkington products to help with other issues e.g. Security, Sound installation, Safety, Climate Control.
